He became a curator of the Near Eastern and Asian Civilizations department of the Royal Ontario Museum, and a professor of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto in 1963. Over a long career he was involved in and headed archaeological excavations in Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. In 1986 he became Director of the Royal Ontario Museum, a post he held for seven years, during which he presided over the design and creation of the Egyptian Gallery. He continued to teach at the University of Toronto until his retirement.
He died Feb. 7th, 2006.
